On a Pot of Tulips

BUDS — all pink and white from a country garden,
Prim in shawls of green as New England spinsters—
How they shook! how, tense as for flight on tiptoe,
Blushed to be looked at!
Flowers — as Pope says women — at heart are wantons!
Now these painted daughters of pagan Flora
Loll like green-zoned goddesses posed by Rubens,
Clothed — in their blushes.
