INDUSTRIAL AMERICA

Our national prosperity awaits recognition of the basic fact that America and American industry are one. America’s great corporations have come to possess paramount social significance; their operations condition the daily life of the people. A knowledge of their work, their thought, their policies—the philosophy that governs them—is vital to present understanding and future hopefulness.

With this in mind The Atlantic has arranged to publish a series of papers from Arthur Pound’s forthcoming book, INDUSTRIAL AMERICA: Its Way of Work and Thought, scheduled for publication in 1935. Mr. Pound’s studies in social and economic history are well known to Atlantic readers through frequent contributions to this magazine over the past fourteen years, dating back to his prophetic series on “The Iron Man in Industry.” For his new book, Mr. Pound has selected certain outstanding manufacturing corporations, each a leader in its particular field, but all having in common a deep-seated public interest by reason of importance in our national life, size, widely spread stock ownership, the employment of many thousands of persons, and broad, forward-looking policies.

The series includes the leading producer in each of the following basic industries: motors, steel, oil, electrical equipment, glass, abrasives, rubber, containers, building material, paper, dairy products, and cereals. A discussion of the resources, researches, and operating policies of these companies is well in line with Atlantic tradition, because events have demonstrated that America’s future depends upon steady industrial progress.

The Eight Advertisement Pages immediately following are presented each month by the corporations listed below, whose staffs assist the author in collecting materials and verifying facts, in an effort to provide for Atlantic readers an authentic interpretation of the close relation between America’s leading industries and the life of our people:
