It Was Like This

A SMALLISH volume containing two stories of the World War, Report to Major Roberts’ and Blood Lust,’ but in it are packed a great many of the crude realities of the American Expeditionary Force. These are grim, almost terrible stories of actual war. As such they have a genuine value in themselves, and perhaps an added reference valuem these days of war, confusion, and hesitation. Mr. Allen is probably the best exponent of the American doughboy, and these stories are among his most successful narratives.
