Sanda Mala is the old princess, the mother of the heroine, and she is a breath-taking creation. Burma and its people and the English residents are drawn with a grave, appreciative accuracy. This is not only a competent book; it has interest and meaning and beauty. One hopes Mr. Collis will go on and write more books out of his Burmese experience and the wisdom it has brought him.
