MR. HAMILTON BASSO, always entertaining, has never been more entertaining than in this novel about Gilgo Slade, political dictator of Louisiana. In this book Gilgo is running for Senator — with the Presidency as his ultimate objective — against Uncle Thomas, who has the misfortune to be a decent fellow, hence in no class with Gilgo, who plans to win the race with the carefully calculated aid of the Fat Lady and the Dwarf, the Fire-Eating Cannibal from the Heart of Africa, and his own Champion HillyBilly Band.
If it was impossible for Thomas to win against such a superior combination, it was next to impossible for his nephew and ward, Hazzard, to carry on a charming love affair with Erin — so firmly entrenched are the forces of evil in every corner of the fair country. Mr. Basso leads his nice lovers through a tangle of difficulties to a grand and fitting climax. Whether as a novel of power politics or as a love story, Sun in Capricorn is a highly satisfying performance. J. C.
