The Uninvited

By DOUBLEDAY,DORAN
ANCIENT love and malice permeate the very walls of certain rooms in Cliff End, an old, lonely house on the shores of North Devon, materializing at night in the ghosts of two beautiful women. Roderick and Pamela Fitzgerald, having bought Cliff End, discover in time that the nocturnal drama is connected with the fortunes of their young neighbor Stella. Meredith; but it takes them a long time and many sleepless frightened hours to solve the mystery which, I am afraid, the reader guesses much sooner than they. The characters are likable and the scenes of horror produce occasional real shivers; but everybody and everything is just a little too nice in a politely sophisticated way. R. M. G.
