Poem by a Stranger
by MARGARET McGOVERN
WHEN I stare in the window
At happiness I see
A lot of children playing,
And one on her knee
At happiness I see
A lot of children playing,
And one on her knee
Pressed close against her
Like flower against flower:
The earth for their feet,
Heaven for their dower.
Like flower against flower:
The earth for their feet,
Heaven for their dower.
Earth-shine, fire-shine
And something blue between
That sends out a fragrance —
What can it mean?
And something blue between
That sends out a fragrance —
What can it mean?
Once I am sure they saw me
And gave a lovely leap,
But I went quickly
Before I could weep.
And gave a lovely leap,
But I went quickly
Before I could weep.
