Proposed Amendment
JUST now I’m sunk in misery
So deep the one escape I see
Is via death. For while the morrow
May shine triumphant over sorrow,
Today’s so steeped in grief that I
Would give most anything to die.
At least I would give anything
But life . . . and there’s the serpent sting!
For every way I’d be content
With death, except it’s permanent.
Gould I but alter Nature’s laws,
I’d add a codicil or clause
Which mercifully would provide
For temporary suicide!
