A distinguished art book, very slightly marred by a certain stylistic quaintness in the scholarly text and by glaring typographical errors. Printed in Paris in an English translation, this extremely thorough volume by the Curator of the French Museum of Modern Art contains a full-length biography and critical appreciation of Cézanne (with illustrations showing formative influences): quotations from Cézanne’s letters showing the man and his views on painting; a selection of comments by critics and painters; and 160 plates, 24 of them in full color, followed by descriptive and analytic notes. The color reproductions are superb.
