THIS mortal shell Thou gavest me,
To hear and sing eternity,
Can sing no more:
No voice will hear
But earthly loss and plunging spear,
Crying near, surging near.
Ah Jesu! from eternity
Renew the shell Thou gavest me,
Thee to adore!
Make it to hear
No more of loss, no more the spear,
Or the fear — mortal fear.
So hearing it will sing anew,
Songs of You, self-adieu.
