A long, consistently pedestrian novel which instructs the reader in Chinese politics from the Boxer Rebellion to the controversy over Chiang Kai-shek. The two central characters are a hardheaded newspaper tycoon and an idealistic humanitarian, both of whom grew up as American missionaries’ sons in China. As fictional creations, both are made of hackneyed stuff.
