M Is for Mother
by . Longmans, Green, $3.00.
Mother lives in the country but that doesn’t deter her from keeping an eye on her daughter in London. She writes and telephones, advises and complains, sends money secretly, arranges introductions, and creates a state of disjointed confusion that is beyond imagination. Take the question of the innocent little code word that balloons into an opium den, and the clipping about unscrupulous landladies with “Your father has read this too” in the margin. Anyone who has ever tried to pacify a remote and worried relative will recognize Alother with glee. She’s wonderful.
