The Passing Remark

by WILLIAM D. MUNDELL
FREEM JENKINS had just bought a donkey.
— Maybe because in certain ways it displayed
Some of his own characteristics
He was unusually fond of the animal.
It wouldn’t be pushed around
And it had a mind of its own.
It brayed sometimes just to hear itself.
Freem’s neighbors had recognized a likeness
But the comparison had not become acute
Until one of the neighbors met Freem and the donkey
Walking side by side on the road one morning.
They exchanged a mild “hello”
And the neighbor quickly added,
“First time I’ve seen yeh together!”
