Excerpt from the long poem

by TCHICAYA U TAM’SI

. . . here is the stream again under the rainbow
the stream takes me by the feet and the head
the jackals are like my teeth
they stink of the knowing serpent
in one of my memory’s holes
the owl watches me take
my first steps drunk with so many stars
my life is one that kills
take it
not to die
I realize that my congo
wants to live free
freedom for
my teeth
to be jackals
redolent
any apple will do
if love is sad
night will come my soul is ready
