Last Night
Last night
in great surprise and delight
I closed my eyes
and became dead
on my broad bed
Apologetically stiff I lay
seeing myself
night into day
and knew a huge feeling of gratitude
at the loneliness of my favorite tie
at the heartsick cry
of a homeless comb
accusing me from my blue dress suit
Cut off at the root
of flowery youth
pleasure was mine
I was supine in my cool truth
No tomorrow, no yesterday
no more sugar to borrow
from Mrs. O’Small down the hall
and best of all
no more wall
between me and the girl in number sixteen
no more to say
my teeth were at rest
my nose strict
my toes posed
my goose cooked
my bucket kicked
(I would never have guessed how well I looked with my mouth closed)
in great surprise and delight
I closed my eyes
and became dead
on my broad bed
Apologetically stiff I lay
seeing myself
night into day
and knew a huge feeling of gratitude
at the loneliness of my favorite tie
at the heartsick cry
of a homeless comb
accusing me from my blue dress suit
Cut off at the root
of flowery youth
pleasure was mine
I was supine in my cool truth
No tomorrow, no yesterday
no more sugar to borrow
from Mrs. O’Small down the hall
and best of all

between me and the girl in number sixteen
no more to say
