The Climb
If I should die but not be dead
and maggots as inverted horns
crawl into my head
Do not strip me as a child new born
before a sexless girl on a white bed
Let me watch
my dogged feet
ankle deep
cuff and walk
the waters of a beach
in the surf sound
Let the salt leech
through shin
to breast
to the further reach
of brain bone
Till the sun gums
and waters swell
the gnawed skull
sealed and brown
And the worms turn
out of time and mind
heaved and heeled
at tide rise
me
To the steep climb
deep slide and ease
of our strange own same sea
and maggots as inverted horns
crawl into my head
Do not strip me as a child new born
before a sexless girl on a white bed
Let me watch
my dogged feet
ankle deep
cuff and walk
the waters of a beach
in the surf sound
Let the salt leech
through shin
to breast
to the further reach
of brain bone
Till the sun gums
and waters swell
the gnawed skull
sealed and brown
And the worms turn
out of time and mind
heaved and heeled
at tide rise
me
To the steep climb
deep slide and ease
of our strange own same sea
