Sherri Walker Vail, of Dallas, Texas, writes: "We desperately need a SHORT substitute for saying either 'World Wide Web' or 'double-u, double-u, double-u' (mostly pronounced here in Texas dub-ya, dub-ya, dub-ya)! Please advise."
This one seems obvious to me, except: should we add or, well, double, do you suppose? "Sextuple-u" or "Octuple-u"?

I recall reading in Wired a year or so ago that people (presumably in Silicon Valley) were saying "Triple-dub" for the ubiquitous www that begins every web address. I can't say it without feeling a little silly though, like a cheesy lounge singer or something. I feel like I'm trying to impress by being "in the know."
Still, it's better than "double-you-double-you-double-you"....

I have recently been hearing wuh-wuh-wuh. It is much easier to say than dub-ya dub-ya dub-ya and does not sound nearly as pretentious as triple-dub or dub-cubed.

Beautiful,Sherri Walker Vail. If dub-ya, dub-ya, dub-ya is the Pronunciation of Choice, then the only alternative name for the three double-yous is naturally 'tree dub-yas'.

One possible sub for www: wow. This can be understood either as a universally accepted misspelling or as a synonym for "world of (the) web".

From the Toronto Serial Diners Collective:
My favourite response to this one is "wuhbuh buh", which trips nicely off the tongue, suggests three-ness, and almost, if you follow me, sounds like an anagram of "w".
We also suggest "weewah", which, again, is fun to say; and "hexu" (double-u times 3).
"Fourteen-u's" has no chance whatsoever of catching on, nor should it; but the explanation justifying it is fun. Let's look at that phrase "double u double u double u". Let's start from the end: "double u". That's "uu". Fair enough. Then let's step back one position closer to the front. "Double u double u". Well, the last "double u" we've already replaced with uu. That renders it "double u uu", which is, of course, "uuuuuu". Then, filling that clump of u's in for the last two "double u's" in the full phrase, we get "double u uuuuuu", which translates into "uuuuuuuuuuuuuu", or "fourteen-u's". I dare anyone to try using this word even once in their life. In fact, I dare anyone to even attempt to follow my explanation.

I take my tongue on a detour around this clumsy www. In my head I say "tri-wee" and if I need to refer to it verbally I usually call it, "The pre-tri-wee," but only to people I know well. Marilyne
