Piya Kochhar, from New York, New York, writes: "Is there a word for when a person finds something that they didn't know they'd lost until they find it? An example of this would be if I put two dollars in my jean pocket and forget about the money being there. Then a few weeks later I put on my jeans and find the two dollars, which I'd forgotten all about until that moment. Or, if I suddenly receive a letter or phone call from a friend whom I'd 'forgotten' to miss until I receive the letter or the call. It's been happening to me a lot recently, and I can't seem to find a word to perfectly describe it. Any suggestions?"
P.S. While Barbara Wallraff is on vacation, I'll be posting new Word Fugitives
here in Post & Riposte.

Finding something you didn't know you'd lost is how I've always described "Love."

My grandmother insisted that finding something you didn't know you had lost was properly called "fool luck" - with the clear understanding that only fools qualified for that sort of luck.
