T. Conway writes: "It seems that 'You know what?' has found its way into almost everyone's vocabulary, so why not create a shortened version? I think rappers and their fans have shortened it by a third with 'word up.' But the job's not yet complete, and 'word up' is too 'hipspeak,' if you will, for me."

What makes you think that rappers and their fans can think, much less speak.

Rappers certainly talk a lot, but I concur; they don't speak. What they do is something in the nether region between poetry and song, but replacing true artistry with some sort of techno-pop. If it weren't already called rap,
it would make another nice word fugitive.
