Seb Beloe, of London, England, writes: "I have been pondering what might be a useful word to describe someone who is concerned about society's progress towards 'sustainable development.' No word (that I know of) adequately covers the full gambit of what this involves. 'Environmentalist' is, I suppose, the closest thing we have, and so perhaps the new word should be 'sustainabilist'?
"Comments would be appreciated!"

Surely sustainabilist is far too clumsy a word - just as environmentalist is a bit of a mouthful. As an alternative, I suggest, simply, 'sustainist'.

"full gambit"? I think you meant "full gamut".

English not being my native tongue, I may be on the wrong track here, but anyway:
I propose "environmantal equilibrist". Pretty much the same as environmentalist but in stressing the aim for balance, the term eliminates the fanatical stance that some people may read into environmantalist.

"Sustainable development."
One who developes Sustainability.
Hmmm,
I am perpending the possibility of "Perpetuator".
Plausible?
And the great thing is we don't have to reprint all those dictionaries!

A word for someone working towards a society's sustainability? Simple: optimist.
