Marylou Arnault, of Bala-Cynwyd, Pa., writes: "Every so often I want to say that something is 'classy' -- but that's such a declasse word that it's practically an oxymoron. 'Elegant' and 'stylish' aren't really what I mean, and 'tony' sounds phony. Any ideas?"

Yeah, I know. James Cagney always brought his broads to a classy joint.... The problem comes up when I want to exchange 'joint' for 'restaurant': I still get the James Cagney image. You could go anywhere with this one- luxurious, fancy, elegant, stylish, upmarket, and posh, for example. It would depend on what you're talking about, I think. I think I understand what she doesn't want to say. I'd like to know more about what she does want to say.

`the bomb'
only works as predicate nominative, not as attributive adjective
