At about midnight on October 25, Hurricane Otis made landfall just outside Acapulco, Mexico. The system had originally been forecast to develop into a milder storm but underwent rapid intensification as it approached land, striking Acapulco as a Category 5 hurricane with peak winds of 165 mph (270 km/h). The ferocious winds and heavy rainfall blew out windows, tore the roofs from buildings, and left a trail of destruction affecting nearly a million residents. The reported death toll rose over the weekend to more than 45. Gathered below are images from the storm-affected state of Guerrero, from its coastal tourist areas to the residential neighborhoods farther inland.
