At Night

ALONE, beneath the solemn stars I stood,
And felt night’s spacious loneliness, but yet
Life’s sorrow and defeat could not forget;
To-morrow’s terrors trembled in my blood !

One came and said : " Receive into thine heart
Vast starry courage from the heavens above
In this great universe, whose law is love,
Whose end is victory, thou hast thy part! ”
