Diamond

I SAW your eyes tonight, deep blue;
Sad truly, but so only made
More clear like water in the shade
Where boys peer down for bass or trout.
And so I peered to fathom you.

My gaze was far from touching ground.
Fast sloped the opal sides away
And further down assurance lay,
So that my line was all let out
With deeper caverns still to sound.

But yet joy! joy! for what I found.
Your lovely silence uttered more
Than stubborn lips would say before
And, flowering everywhere about,
Lay prisoned pearl and diamond.

There in the quiet water, shown
By sorrow vulnerable and dear,
Shone forth immaculate the fear
No glance can ever violate,
Your secret self like watered stone.
