DOUBLEDAY DORAN
PAINFULLY uprooted from its native Tyrol in an absent-minded bit of Axis geopolitics, the Mumelter family finds itself in Czechoslovakia. The younger members adapt themselves in various ways, but the grand old man of the story, Old Mumelter, is entirely unreconstructible. Mr. Lothar has written a full-bodied, very serious novel. His Fascists and Nazis are of varying shades of black; his Americans owe more to Hollywood and Sinclair Lewis than to the author’s residence among us. But there is fine courage in the book, and to read it is a satisfying experience.
