Sanctuary
by DAVID MCCORD
Lo, the poor Indian, and
Gladly, the cross-eyed bear:
How many years have I known them,
This never enfranchised pair!
They, the two disembodied
Survivors of common ground,
Live or have lived in lapsus
Linguae — suspicious sound.
Now from the orthographic
Realm of their kith and kin
Cry, the beloved country,
Is here to take them in.
