Hats Are Fun

By DAVID MCCORD

Hats Are Fun This Spring — Advt.

Hats are fun!
Read and run —
Show me one!
Hats are fun?
Who has done
That to a hat?
Where are we at:
Hats are fun?
Gone is the bun,
Gone the brow:
What now?
Hats are fun,
And bangs begun
When hats were sad
(Or what was bad
In swirl or curl)
Become the girl,
Now hats are fun.
We used to shun
Eugénios, felts,
And hats like welts.
Later they made
A lovely trade
Of little mats
Like hats.
Other springs,
Other things:
The snood, the snare,
Netted hair.
We swore. I swear
They’ve gone for fair.
We have instead
The hatted head:
The WAVE’S, the WAAC’S,
With little plaques;
The visored lass
I often pass;
The kerchiefed crop,
The pillbox top . . .
The old beret,
Monty’s way.
I say — I’ve said —
O heart of lead:
Be light, be bright,
See what’s in sight!
In shade, in sun,
Till wars are won:
Hats, be fun!
